Persuasive Speech on Campaign Finance Reform – COMM111

Specific Purpose: To convince my audience that campaign finance reform is an important issue that must be fixed.

What is wrong with our system right now there are a wide variety of problems with the u.s election process and the root of it is money did you know that in 2016 17 donors gave three quarters of the democratic national convention funding according to bernie sanders.com in 2019 because of our ineffective laws our government runs inefficiently elected officials

Focus too much of their time raising money with a level playing field for campaign funding we will see the greater racial and class diversity amongst donors increased number of low dollar donors and citizen participation we will also see more women running for office more quality time with average citizens and better policies as a result how to achieve it we

Need more people to be aware and care about this issue politicians need to feel pressure from their citizens in order to change in order for change to take place we need to limit the amount of money that could be donated by super pacs and encourage more small money donations there should be more transparency and where money is coming from not all money should be

Taken out of politics but there definitely should be more transparency and less corrupt money in politics a lot of people don’t see the point in trying to reform campaign finance laws it’s a system that is designed to save the status quo and is viewed as almost impossible to break but we cannot ignore this corruption anymore this is a solvable issue and too big

Of a deal to try not to fix in 2010 only point 26 of americans gave 200 or more to a federal candidate in 2012 132 americans gave 60 percent of super pac money according to lawrence license author of the usa and lester land in 2014 these statistics are really sad reality of the american politics because of our lack of effective campaign finance laws the us is

Unable to be a high fun functioning democracy in order for our country to truly represent the people we have to take big money out of politics there are a wide variety of problems with the us election process and the root of it is money campaign receipts for members of the house of representatives totaled to 1.9 billion dollars in 2010 according to the nation dot

Com in 2012 super psc’s play a large role in the corruption of our government there are political organizations that can take unlimited sums from individuals corporations and labor unions to spend in support of or opposition to federal candidates according to opensecrets.org in 2015. they tend to run negative advertisements since they are not held accountable

To voters the way the candidates committees are and a lot of donors can remain anonymous according to cnn contributor richard hassan in 2012. there were 181 million dollars spent with dark money which is money that is untraceable and money from there is significantly influenced by foreign sources according to elizabeth warren u.s senator in 2019 it’s not just

One party that partakes in this corruption though in 2016 17 donors gave three quarters of the democratic national convention funding we should all care about campaigns fight campaign finance laws or the lack therefore because it affects all of us with ineffective laws comes ineffective government elected officials focus too much time of their time raising the

Money congressmen spend hours a day calling donors and asking for money rather than doing their actual job according to norah o’donnell of cbs news in 2016. our elected officials do not represent the people because they are only looking out for their best interests they would rather prioritize prioritize making enough money to be re-elected instead of focusing

On what’s best for their citizens they depend on donors to get reelected more and more if we took money out of politics our elected officials would be able to represent us better everyone will experience a benefit from campaign finance reform in order for actual progress to happen or whatever issue you’re passionate about whether it be climate change cheaper

College prescription drug prices or even gun violence we won’t be able to change anything with the amount of corruption in our government right now and in order to achieve better campaign finance laws and less corruption we need more people to be aware and care about this issue most americans acknowledge that this is an issue but do not think of it as a priority

Politicians need to feel pressure from their citizens in order for a change to take place in addition to this we need to limit the amount of money that can be donated by super pacs and encourage more small money donations there should also be more transparency in where the money is coming from we can also put more pressure on politicians to not take pac money

Candidates such as bernie sanders and elizabeth warren have vowed to stop accepting their money because many voters value that in a candidate by supporting candidates that support campaign finance reform it is more likely for it to happen when i say money should be taken out of politics i’m not talking about the donations that come from people like you or like

Me i’m talking about the money used to corrupt politicians and to turn our government some people argue that limiting the amount you can donate to a political campaign it is infringement of our freedom of speech however i believe it is more unfair to be to have corruptions in the top one percent have more of a say than everyone else to limit a very small amount

Of regular people from over contributing a lot of people don’t see the point in trying to reform campaign finance laws it’s definitely a system that’s designed to save the status quo and is viewed as almost impossible to break but we cannot ignore this corruption anymore this is a solvable issue and we can definitely fix this in conclusion both reforming the way

Private money flows in our elections and demanding transparency are essential to ensure that that the voters of all voters are equally respected our elected officials should continuously seek to amplify the voices of everyday citizens the voices of small donors big donors or even non-donors should be considered equally that’s how we build a society with equity
